President/Business Manager - SMART Local Union 105
Lou began his career in the unionized sheet metal industry in 1987 and worked with the tools of the trade in the capacity of journeyman and foreman for several of our signatory contractors both in the HVAC and general/architectural sheet metal industries.
In 1996, he was elected to the position of Local Union Trustee and in 1998, was elected as an Executive Board Member for Local Union 108.
In 1999, Lou was appointed by former Business Manager Roy A. Ringwood to the position of Local Union Organizer.
After the merger of Local Union’s 102 and 108 in 2001, Lou was appointed Director of Organizing for the new Local Union 105. He held that position until his election to Business Representative in June 2004.
In May 2005, Lou was honored to receive the “Joe Hill Organizing Award” for his contributions to organizing in the construction sector by the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO.
In June of 2010, Lou was elected to the position of Vice-President/Business Representative and was appointed Assistant Business Manager of Local 105.
On November 1, 2012, Lou became the President/Business Manager of the new Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, & Transportation Workers (SMART) Local 105, after the retirement of former President/Business Manager, Roy A. Ringwood.
In May 2013, Lou received the “Miguel Contreras Leadership Award” from the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and was recognized by the Los Angeles City Council for his dedication and exceptional leadership skills that encourage future generations of labor activists.
In April 2014, Lou was appointed to the Workforce Investment Board (WIB) by Los Angeles City Mayor Eric Garcetti.
Lou holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Labor Studies from the National Labor College. He is also proud to be a second generation union sheet metal worker.
